Freud has been a great influence in both psychology and culture (besides the fact that the man had a fantastic beard), and it’s quite the mental exercise to try and think what kind of bars he would have frequented. In truth, Freud (the bar) has been something that was quite well seen on the London circuit and for very good reasons.

The brutalist, concrete walls set the tone for a bar that is unpretentious yet intellectual. It’s fairly well hidden (having to go down some obscure steps to even get to the place), but that just adds a sense of elite club that people genuinely yearn for.
The Raspberry Russian was delicious – a bit like an illicit love affair (without the drama that comes with). I find that the secret of making a good cocktail is masking that strong alcoholic taste. If any particular alcohol is of exquisite quality, then you would want to ruin its taste and serve it neat. It’s hard, as well, to make a cocktail not taste clearly of alcohol. Yet the Russian was sweet, with only the minimal hint of vodka (which, in all fairness, you would want to preserve – otherwise what’s the point of it being vodka versus any other booze?).
Oh and the staff were absolute dolls – friendly and fun.
